What is the PBX system?

A PBX (Private Branch Exchange) is an internal telephone network deployed by organizations to manage internal communication among employees and external communication with customers via VoIP, ISDN, or analog lines. In simple words, a PBX system is a telephone system that allows extension systems in one office to connect to extension systems in another office, making it ideal for businesses operating in multiple locations.

Types of PBX system 

PBX systems are majorly of five types: - 

1. Analog or traditional PBX system 

Analogue PBX systems connect callers via traditional landlines. It has a lot of basic features like extensions, mute, re-dial, speed dial and call forwarding. It requires physical equipment and is still used by a lot of enterprises present in remote areas.  

2. Internet protocol PBX system 

IP PBX systems use Internet Protocol (IP) networks to manage voice communications. These on-site systems have features like video calling, auto attendants, mobility integration, voicemail to email and call-back options.  

3. Cloud-based PBX system 

Cloud-based PBX systems are hosted off-site and maintained by a VoIP provider. The hosting requires a lower monthly fee and maintenance costs. As there are no installation costs, it is a great choice for smaller businesses. It has all the features of an IP PBX system. 

4. Virtual PBX system 

Virtual PBX system is similar to a cloud-based PBX but has fewer features and costs less. It only allows internal calls over the Internet. Features like voicemail and call management depend on the provider. 

5. Hybrid PBX System 

Hybrid PBX systems allow businesses to leverage existing infrastructure while gradually transitioning to more modern solutions. It combines existing PBX equipment with VoIP offering many IP extensions connecting phones to the office and offering features like virtual conference rooms, SIP trunking, video conferences, fax over IP and auto-attendant.
