Referral in Facebook Messenger

Updated

Facebook Messenger allows you to create a link (M.Me links) that when clicked, the user will automatically start a conversation with your bot. The mechanism is very simple and effective when it comes to boosting your conversions. What’s more, it is a platform-independent solution, meaning that it works both on mobile and desktop devices.

You can use M.Me links to start a message thread with people. Messenger Links use a Page’s username to create a short and memorable link (m.me/username) that, when clicked, opens a conversation with the business in Messenger. Moreover, m.me is a shortened URL service operated by Facebook that redirects users to a person, page, or conversation in Messenger. You can use them on your website, email newsletters, and more.

M.Me Link Format

The format of the link is

http://m.me/<PAGE_NAME>,

where

PAGE_NAME

is the handle of the Facebook page the app is linked to.

M.Me links with REF Parameters

In addition to giving you a way to link to your Page, the Messenger Platform also supports the passing an arbitrary reference parameter via M.Me links. Thus, when a person clicks M.Me link that contains a ref parameter and is taken into an existing thread, it will open the standard messaging window. This allows pages to reply to people based on the context that the ref parameter provides. You can even use M.Me links with ref parameters for many purposes, such as tracking different links placed in different pages or tying a Messenger user to a session or Universal profile under accounts.

An m.me link with an added parameter looks like this:

http://m.me/<PAGE_NAME>?ref=<REF_PARAM>
