DM (Direct Message)

This page is about the meaning of DM or Direct Message, its uses in marketing and best usage practices. Read on.

What does DM mean?

DM or direct message means a private message exchanged between users on social media channels like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, TikTok and more. It allows users to converse one on one, instead of on public posts or comments that are visible to all followers.

Users can send and receive text messages, images, videos, documents, links and even video call using the DM feature. Some platforms allow group chatting where multiple participants exchange messages or video call. While DM is considered more private than public posts, platforms have their own rules regarding who can DM whom:

  • Instagram allows you to DM a maximum of 15 users.
  • Twitter requires users to follow each other before sending DM and you can DM up to 50 users.
  • Facebook allows users to DM a brand only after they have “liked” the brand’s page.

Now that you understand the meaning of DM, let’s jump into how to use DM judiciously.

Ethical Use of DM

While DM is an effective way to engage customers on crowded social networks and build relationships, there are certain dos and don’ts one must follow while using them.

Professionalism: No matter how heated a conversation gets, maintain a calm and courteous tone of voice.

Personalization: Inject a bit of personality in your messages and stay away from automated messages that sound impersonal and robotic.

Responsiveness: Try to respond to incoming DMs speedily and use an omnichannel social media management solution to keep track of all your open conversations.

Avoid spamming: Most platforms place limits on the number of DMs you can send so use them wisely. You don’t want to be blocked or reported for spamming your audience.
