Instagram as a Listening source

Updated

Instagram is one of the most popular social media channels with a large user base of over 1 billion monthly active users and high engagement rates, making it a valuable platform for reaching and interacting with potential customers. Brands can use Instagram to showcase their products, tell their brand story, and connect with their audience through features such as posts, stories, and influencer partnerships.

Listen from Instagram

  • Instagram Listening, unlike keyword listening (from keywords), is restricted to Hashtags(#) - that is, messages (Posts from the public profile, IGTV posts, Reels) can only be fetched via matched hashtags in queries.

  • It means that Instagram Posts (from public profiles), IGTV & Reel mentions can be fetched via Hashtag listening only.

Note: This is a channel limitation imposed by Meta and the behavior is applicable to any social listening player in the industry.

Frequently asked questions

General Instagram FAQs

Use Instagram Hashtags in Listening Settings to activate Hashtags. Every hashtag used in a topic will automatically be added in Hashtag Manager, which in turn needs to be toggled to start fetching mentions.

Backfills are not supported for Instagram. Matched Mentions will be grabbed for Hashtags after being enabled in Hashtag Manager on a going forward basis.

API & Metadata Limitations. Message Level Properties like Profile Name, Profile Handle, Profile Metrics (Followers, etc), Location, etc are not provided by Instagram APIs (valid for all players in this industry).

Fetching for upto 30 Hashtags per Owned Profile is allowed. So, for 5 authenticated accounts, 150 Hashtags can be set to fetching.

After adding Hashtags to a topic, always remember to enable fetching for Hashtags via Hashtag Manager.

A Hashtag will continue fetching as long as it is part of at-least 1 Fetching Topic.

Instagram does not allow profile-specific monitoring or domain-based listening. Instagram only allows monitoring via hashtags (added to a query-based Topic, then activated in the hashtag manager).

Due to API limitations we can’t perform any listening on private accounts.

As Meta does not provide any intimation for removal of the data, it remains in our environment.

Yes, from Sprinklr you can engage with the user tweet by double clicking on the conversation stream which further opens a panel for replying, assigning to another user or assigning to a particular macro. But in earned mentions you can't reply to the post.

Due to API limitations - Likes count, comments count is shown what was, at the time of ingestion of data.

Reels FAQs

Instagram Reels are now supported in Listening. Find public Instagram media including Reels that have been tagged with specific hashtags via hashtag listening.

Users can perform analysis on Reel posts just like any other Instagram post types (Photo, Video etc.). For filtering, the dimension Media Type = Instagram Reel can be used on listening widgets and dashboards.

Users can fetch Reels data into listening by registering the hashtags in the hashtag manager.

Users will need to accommodate the hashtags within the 30 hashtags limit per account. Emojis in hashtag queries are not supported.

Backfill is currently not supported for Instagram Reels Listening.

Instagram Reels fan mentions will not show a thumbnail for Instagram Reels due to some disruptions in the channel's API. To view the thumbnail for an Instagram Reel, click on the permalink of the post to view the post on native. Additionally, you can click on the date icon to see the reels on native.

Sprinklr cannot fetch a collaborative post for Instagram Reels. For example, if the collaborative post is let's say between brand X and brand Y (both of the client), then sprinklr won’t be able to fetch collaborative reel.
